A stellar field is set to battle out next Tuesday afternoon’s Group 3 Dowling McCarthy Tyres Devonport Cup (452m).
Champion trainer Ted Medhurst looks to play a leading hand in the Group 3 feature following the scorching 25.49 heat performance by his top flight galloper High Treason (Barcia Bale x Cheetah Zorro).
“High Treason did a fantastic job to win his heat the way he did, he’s a very hard chaser,” Medhurst offered.
“Being away from Devonport for a while since November seems to have sparked him right up and the dog just seems to have a real affinity with the place having won an Ivory Memorial Classic.
“The dog has been in brilliant form and his effort through the Hobart Thousand Series was great, if he could have crossed Kouta Mayhem early in the final it may have been a different story, the owners get a real kick out of the dog – he’s very reliable,” Ted said.
Drawing box seven for the 65th running of the Cup, Medhurst is positive about his chances.
“Our bloke has done an outstanding job to qualify and will need to repeat the same effort – in this field especially you can’t afford any errors. There is speed drawn around him in boxes 5, 6 and 8,” he said.
Medhurst will be chasing his fifth Devonport Cup trophy, the first won by Blazenka’s Flyer in 1990.
His most recent was claimed by Keune in 2016, recently whelping her first litter to Fernando Bale.
“Leeroy Rogue (for Debbie Cannan) put in an excellent run in his heat, not many dogs could match him running those sectionals. Drawing box two gives him a strong chance as well.
He’s had four starts in Tasmania for three wins and a third in a Hobart Thousand heat.
“High Treason has become a more seasoned dog with experience – it’s all up to the dog now come next week but we know he will give 110 percent.”
