This Sunday’s much anticipated Community Picnic Race Day at Cessnock has received a huge boost with confirmation four extremely well-credentialed sprinters will take place in the feature event of the day, The Multicam Shootout (457m).
In what’s sure to create plenty of interest and hype during the day, talented performers Knight Sprite, George Sannette, Old Spice and One Hill will each strut their stuff individually over the 457 metres, with the fastest time posted of the quartet deemed the ‘Shootout’ victor.
Connections of the winner will receive a $1,000 Gift Card along with a service to gun sire Fabregas, courtesy of Paul and Michelle Westerveld at Meticulous Lodge.
The four greyhounds invited to contest the Shootout boast terrific records, headed by Gayle Masterson’s multiple group winning sprinter Knight Sprite, unquestionably NSW’s number 1 greyhound.
Already a winner in 2016 of the Group 2 Gosford Gold Cup and Group 2 Richmond Derby, and a last start third in the Group 1 Golden Easter Egg, Knight Sprite is the headline attraction for Sunday’s Cessnock Picnic Race Day, with his trainer Gayle Masterson ecstatic about being involved.
“I’m really looking forward to Sunday, it should be a fantastic afternoon for greyhound racing, Cessnock is a good safe track that has plenty to offer,” Masterson said.
“I jumped at the chance to be involved, I’ve had Knight Sprite back in work for a fortnight now, I’m going to give him a 400 at Cessnock tomorrow (Wednesday) and he’ll be ready for the 457 on Sunday.
“This dog just continues to amaze me with everything he does, his will to win is unbelievable. I didn’t watch the replay of the Easter Egg until a few days later but when I did I noticed he didn’t drive around the turns like he normally would. I took him to Peter Yore and begged him to do an x-ray and it showed he had a bit of tendinitis – it made me even prouder of his Easter Egg effort – he just doesn’t throw the towel in this dog, I couldn’t be prouder.”
Masterson has earmarked late June’s Group 1 Winter Carnival Cup at Albion Park with her pride and joy with November’s Group 1 Melbourne Cup at Sandown Park firmly on the radar also.
Immediate plans?
“There’s a Ladbrokes Monthly Medal event at Gosford for him on May 10 so we’ll go to that and then get ready for Albion Park with a run or two at Wentworth Park – it’s been a whirlwind 12 months – his trophy cabinet is almost completely full now! I’m going to need to get a bigger one the way he’s going,” Masterson chuckled.
