Grubb's Golden Girl Eyes Thousand Title

LOCAL star Peco Can will stamp herself as one of the great females of Tasmanian greyhound racing if she is successful in Thursday night's highly anticipated Group 1 Sky Racing Hobart Thousand Final (461m).

Trained by Robin Grubb, the daughter of Fernando Bale and Sing The Song has taken all before her in recent starts and an ideal preparation heading towards the "big dance" this Thursday night has given connections of the brindle speedster every bit of confidence of landing the $75,000 to-the-winner feature.

Peco Can was the leading local runner in the heats last Thursday night and didn't disappoint, beginning in trademark fashion with brilliant box manners, leading all-the-way to stave off a withering late charge from Wynburn Cutie to run 25.91.

Making it ten from ten over the Hobart 461-metres, Peco Can delivered her 15th victory from 17 starts.

"She has become a very smart chaser with some maturity," proudly stated trainer Robin Grubb.

"Peco did suffer a slight check from Corykodi coming off the back straight which did put her off balance, once she levelled up and pulled away in the straight it was great, but Wynburn Cutie did give us a bit of a fright towards the finish."

To date Peco Can has won a Hobart Breeders Classic, Young Star Classic and a George & Eileen Johnston Puppy Championship at Devonport, though it was her victory in the Hobart Laurels that proved her undeniable claims as one of the top chasers in Australia.

"The Laurels victory will always be the race that stands out as she got bashed around and still found the gap to run down litter sister Hello Rhonda, she is tough and reliable and has grown in strength over time," Grubb offered.

Peco Can is one of the best local hopes of capturing the Hobart Thousand title since Little Spaniard was successful way back in 2008.

"To make the final is a massive thrill and something that only comes along once in a while. To have a bitch with the quality of Peco Can and to have bred her is just a blessing for us. You need luck in these races and we are just proud to be there," added Grubb.
