Pedigree By Design: Charlie Casey

NO, it wasn't the fastest of the night. YES, it was a just a lowly fifth grade. BUT, the victory by Charlie Casey at Wentworth Park on Saturday night should have given breeders an insight.

OK, Charlie's win was overshadowed by the three Group 1s run and won at The
Meadows in Melbourne.

But, Tornado Tears, Deliver and Barooga Brett have garnered the spotlight for quite some time and their pedigrees have been studied by those who are interested enough.

Charlie Casey is by the US-bred, but Irish-based stud dog Kinloch Brae. His dam El Casey is by El Grand Senor-Josey Casey by Pure Octane.

Charlie is owned and trainer by Peter Carr.

Peter owned and trained dam El Casey.

Peter owned and trained second dam Josey Casey.

Peter owned and trained third dam Chamuco (a 2004 whelp).

By the time Charlie Casey had won in 30.23 at Wenty on Saturday night, his record stood at six starts for three wins and a second. He had already won at Wenty in 29.87 and 29.89.

His three named littermates are all winners and brother Jimmy Casey has won four including three at Wenty as well.

So, it is already a very promising litter, whelped in May 2017 (so only 22 months old) which lots and lots to come.

So, why have I found the pedigree of Charlie Casey so interesting, interesting enough to write this column about it?

Let's explain.

When the time came for Peter Carr to breed with dam El Casey he had a very handy race bitch just waiting for an outcross.

El Casey raced 65 times for 11 wins and 18 placings. All except two of her wins came at Dubbo. The others were at Mudgee and significantly at Wentworth Park.

But, it is her pedigree that demands an outcross mating.

El Casey is very heavily in-bred.

Her sire El Grand Senor is by Where's Pedro and he has Black Shiraz in his damline.

Dam Josey Casey is by Pure Octane (a half brother to Where's Pedro) and she too has Black Shiraz in her damline.

Thus El Casey is the product of a mating of El Grand Senor and Josey Casey who are bred on an identical cross.

But, El Casey's second dam Chamuco is by Elite State … keep that in mind.
When Peter went looking for a stud dog back in early 2017, Kinloch Brae had already proven himself as a high class stud dog with his progeny in Australia.

He had already proven himself on the racetrack in the US as a top class sprinter, and was an instant stud success when he landed in Ireland siring 2011 Irish Derby winner and English Derby finalist Razldazl George.

One of his very best sons was Ballymac Vic, four times placed in Group 1s including a third in the English Derby. Ballymac Vic ran a track record (always a HUGE plus for potential stud dogs) at Cork.

At stud, Ballymac Vic has become the sire of the 2018 English Derby winner and third place getter.

Of significance for Peter Carr and his mating of El Casey to Kinloch Brae is the fact that Ballymac Vic is by Kinloch Brae from a daughter of Queensland's own Elite State. Yes, the same Elite State who is the sire of El Casey's second dam.

But, having a broodbitch in-bred 1×1 to the identically bred El Grand Senor and Josey Casey, meant Peter would need to allow the double of that wonderful broodbitch Elusive Rebel its chance to dominate any mating El Casey had.

We have also seen that Kinloch Brae has worked so very well when he mates bitches with Pure Octane in their pedigree. This is how that phenomenal litter that includes Blazin Bomber, Ring The Bell and Bells Are Ringin are bred.

And, champion galloper Destini Fireball was the product of a mating between
Where's Pedro and the Kinloch Brae direct damline. Peter Carr would be recreating the pedigree of yet another champion by putting El Casey to Kinloch Brae.
(As an aside … Destini Fireball's sister Destini Gold is the dam of G1 Temlee winner Barooga Brett, by Barcia Bale.)

Peter Carr's litter that includes multiple Wenty winners Charlie Casey and Jimmy Casey are just starting out on their race careers.

I notice that Peter has not bred El Casey again.

It would be extremely interesting to see what mating he plans next for this bitch.
