THERE is set to be a thrilling finish to the Metropolitan Trainers Premiership for 2018 with just two points separating trainers John Finn and Mark Gatt heading into Saturday night's final race meeting of the year at Wentworth Park.

Scored on a 10-4-2 basis for results at Metropolitan meetings, the leading conditioners have been in a neck and neck battle for basically the second half of 2018, clearing well away from the field, having again enjoyed successful years with the collar and lead.

Coming agonisingly close to claiming his first Wentworth Park Trainers Premiership with runner-up efforts in 2013, 2014 and 2016, Thirlmere-based Mark Gatt, 39, broke-through in 2017 for his maiden Metropolitan Trainers Premiership, and will be looking to claim back-to-back titles when he ventures to headquarters this Saturday night.

Sitting perched on top with 586 points by virtue of his 43 victories and 47 placings throughout 2018, Finn sits just two points ahead of Gatt heading into Saturday night, with his 584 points coming by way of his 37 winners and 66 placings for the season.

With both trainers represented on Saturday night, the Premiership could very well go down to race nine on the program, where Finn has talented stayer Veloce Nero lining up over the 520m from box eight.

As well as Veloce Nero, Finn has Winsome Willow engaged to contest race seven, while Winsome Bailey is also a reserve on the program in races two and seven.

Conceding the two points heading into Saturday night, Gatt has four runners engaged, with Diamond Heart tackling race one, He's All Shine the second, while Kingsbrae Cheeko and Smoking Road will take their place in race eight.

The Premiership battle will provide an interesting sidelight to Saturday night's final program of 2018, with two of the state's premier trainers fighting it out for this year's Metropolitan Trainers Premiership honours.
