MUCH improved Du Hast could be Group 3 Casino Cup bound after giving Churchable trainer Greg Short his first feature race victory when wining last Friday’s Ab Casey Memorial (484m) at Casino.

Du Hast (Don’t Knocka Him-Fernvale Flyer) ran 28.37 for the 484 metres, scoring by three-quarters of a length over Sergeant Maguire with three and a half lengths to Dance Of Love in third.

The winner started at $8.60 and was always in or near the lead coming off the six box.

“I think he can go around 27.70 there so the up-coming Casino Cup series could be his target,” said an “over the moon” Short after the victory.

Greg, 49, and his now retired 70-year-old father Tony, bred the litter and kept four of them. They are the first venture into greyhound training for Greg.

“I should have taken it up years ago,” he said. “I’m loving it.”
Du Hast is German for “we have” or “you have”.

“I said to my dad we have a good one, so it had to be his name,” said Greg.

Du Hast is also a song in an album by heavy metal rock band Rammstein which says a lot about Greg Short’s music favourites.

While the dog took his record to six wins and 11 placings with the Ab Casey Memorial win, it has not all been plain sailing in recent months.

“He has had a few problems lately, one of which was an irritation of the skin ,” said Greg.

Advice from fellow trainer Reg Hazelgrove helped fix that problem and Greg has watched the dog improve greatly in appearance leading up to the Casino series.

Du Hast has lived in the shadow of his litter sister Fernvale Ruby, the winner of 10 of her 17 race starts. She has also been second three times.

“We have already mapped out her future breeding program and bought two straws for Sulzanti to use on her,” said Greg.

“After that she will go to either Dyna Double One or Fernando Bale.”

Greg’s proud dad Tony originally trained dam Fernvale Flyer, a litter sister to former star stayer Befitting.

The bitch twice fractured a metacarpal and Tony waited 15 months to get her to the racetrack before winning a maiden at Albion Park.

Du Hast is from her second litter.

He and Fernvale Ruby are in-bred 2×2 to littermates Surf Queen and Made To Size. A mating to Sulzanti with Fernvale Ruby will bring in a 2×2 cross of littermates Scissor Queen and Don’t Knocka Him.
