JOHN McCarthy will be “forced into” taking Slick to the heats of the Group 1 Paws of Thunder at Wentworth Park.
McCarthy has simply run out of rivals at Albion Park in top grade sprints.
He said this after Slick (Dyna Lachlan-Pearl Za Zinger) ran 29.71 to win the New Year’s Trophy (520m) at Albion Park last Thursday night. He downed Spring Time Girl and Outside Pass.
“The Clem Jones Cup will be run this coming week over 600 metres and most of the rivals in the New Year’s Trophy will go for that,” said McCarthy.
“Then there are the heats of the Queensland Cup the following week and they will all be in those again. This means my bloke might not get a start in a top grade sprint for another four weeks.”
Slick took his record to 48 starts for 18 wins and 16 placings for $118,000 in stakes.
He has been to Wentworth Park before, back in September and was third coming from well back in the heats of the Bob Payne Spring Sprint.
McCarthy will resist the temptation to step up his dog to 600m again.
“While he is sprinting like he is, I want to keep him to this distance,” he said.
“It looks like I’ll be driving to Sydney.”
McCarthy is buoyed by the recent OK to breed dam Pearl Za Zinger for a fourth litter.
She will be mated to champion sire Barcia Bale. Her third litter is to that dog’s champion son Dyna Double One.
Slick was perfectly placed in the eight box last Thursday night and used the box to perfection leading virtually throughout.
