Veloce Nero Earns National Distance Spot

VELOCE Nero will get the chance to emulate the deeds of her mother Chica Destacada and claim a Nationals title at Cannington on August 24.

VELOCE Nero will get the chance to emulate the deeds of her decorated mother Chica Destacada and claim a Nationals title after winning a thrilling NSW Distance Final (720m) at Wentworth Park on Thursday night.

Back in 2014 – the last time Western Australia hosted the National Championships – Chica Destacada was a resounding winner of the Group 1 National Sprint Final for Doreen Drynan, and at Cannington in a fortnight's time, her daughter Veloce Nero will eye a Nationals title of her own, albeit it over the distance.

A noted drifter in betting for Thursday night's NSW distance qualifier, the John Finn-trained Veloce Nero began with gusto to get the camp right behind her well-supported litter-sister Poco Dorado, with their litter brother Blue Moon Rising right in the mix as well with a lap to go.

In a driving finish, Veloce Nero, winner of the Group 1 Association Cup on Easter Saturday, landed the NSW final by half-a-length from a fast finishing Kanzan, with another neck away to Blue Moon Rising in third.

The time was 42.21.

Earlier in the night at The Meadows, champion stayer Tornado Tears went down at short odds in the Victorian qualifier to Sandown Cup winner Rajasthan, meaning the Rob Britton-trained superstar was heading to Cannington by way of the wild card slot, denying next-in-line, Blue Moon Rising, an opportunity to join his litter-sister Veloce Nero in the group 1 showpiece.

THE NSW Sprint decider proved to be a thrilling spectacle, with the Frank Hurst-trained Good Odds Harada booking a trip to Perth for the Group 1 Grand Final, just not in the fashion favourite backers had anticipated.

In a real mixing affair, outsider Nangar Kash set a frantic pace out in front for trainer Mark Hardman and seemingly had the race in his keeping, before Good Odds Harada came from the clouds to record a three-quarter length 29.87 success.

The group 3 winning litter brother to Feral Franky is better noted as a bold front runner, adding even further merit to Thursday night's come from behind victory.

He heads to Cannington has a force to be reckoned with, winner at 14 of his 35 starts, and capable of running brilliant times.

It's shaping up as a huge night of racing at Cannington on August 24!
