Craggy Island Hits Murray Bridge For Six

SOUTH Australian trainer Ray Fewings knew very early on his Aston Dee Bee-She's A Looper fawn dog pup could run.

Now named Craggy Island, the youngster took his race record to an unbeaten six wins when running a slick 22.01 to win at Murray Bridge on Sunday night.

“He could have just about won a race when he was 10 months old,” said Ray not that he ever contemplated such an exercise.

Nor could he, obviously.

“My straight track is 200 metres and uphill and this pup was matching it with race dogs from my kennel that were winning at the time.”

As an inexperienced young pup, Ray took Craggy Island to Angle Park and matched him in a box-to-box trial with Kisses For Chloe.

That bitch has won 12 of 20 starts and been placed at Group 3 level.

Craggy Island beat Kisses For Chloe in that box-to-box trial at Angle Park.

After six unbeaten starts, all over short courses, Ray now plans to step Craggy Island up to 500 metre racing at Angle Park.

“Who knows,” said Ray when asked if he believes Craggy Island will run out a strong 500m.

“But, his run home time on Sunday was two-tenths quicker than his previous run.

“And his mother She's A Looper was a 600 metre performer, and a litter sister to Worm Burner.”

Ray named the dog after the fictitious island when the main characters of the TV comedy Father Ted live.

“He is a very promising young dog,” said Ray. “And, he is obsessed with chasing.”

Long-term plans are for several feature races coming up at Angle Park, the Derby in September and the Brian Johnstone in November.
