Louis Rumble Sets Pop Northfield Pace

LEGEND trainer Steve Kavanagh reckons it is about time he won another Pop Northfield Maiden Classic and he has a great chance with Louis Rumble.

LEGEND trainer Steve Kavanagh reckons it is about time he won another Pop Northfield Maiden Classic (411m) at Casino.

Kavanagh has “been there, done that” in greyhound racing, training immortal Brother Fox and a myriad of group racing stars.

He'd already won a Pop Northfield “years ago” with Mystic Rumble in track record time, beating her litter brother Cosmic Rumble.

Cosmic Rumble, of course, would go on to win a Golden Easter Egg and become a great stud dog.

Steve fronted at Casino on Thursday with Louis Rumble which is by Fernando Bale from his former star Albion Park performer Joyce Rumble.

He scorched to victory in the sixth heat of the time-honoured Pop Northfield (411m) in 22.92, easily the quickest of the six heats.

The regally bred type scored by seven lengths and started at the amazing odds of $5, beating Kooringa Wagtail and Cash Works.

To add to that, littermate Rumble Ranger, is the second fastest second from the heats and will also make next week's rich finale.

“I've got three or four of the litter that are all about the same ability,” said Steve.

“But, none of them had been in a field and we were not sure what they would do today.”

Joyce Rumble has seven pups now 10 months old by Fabregas.

Kooringa Wagtail also makes the final as the fastest second.

Steve Williams, Josh Allen and Tony Brett added to their lifetime of memories in greyhound racing when they joined together to produce Sentenced (Jury-Velocity Spice) to win his heat in 23.45 at $3.40.

It was a combination hatched at the funeral of Tony Brett's late mother Jenny.

“Josh has been helping Tony for decades and we've become friends,” said Steve.

“Josh came to me at Jenny's funeral and asked about getting a half share in a pup with me.

“This is the pup.”

Sentenced is a real home-bred for Williams who raced both sire and dam and has bred each of them for three generations.

“Jury's pups have really hit the ground running,” said Steve.

“Sentenced is the last of his litter to race and they have all won now. The others all have a Jury theme and are named, Crimes, Detention, Innocent and Testimony.”

Williams has been breeding with Sentenced's damline for a number of years.

He raced his granddam Velocity Wind a litter sister to the sensational Aliwishes Jones who held a couple of class records at Albion Park and was a Group finalist.

Jury, of course, was a multiple Group 1 winner and now stands at stud in South Australia.

“But, Les Bein rang me a few weeks ago to say he has a pup by Jury just broken in that could be anything such was his break-in times,” said Steve.

Other heats winners of the Pop Northfield were:

Another Day (Fernando Bale-Fancy Liza) for Craig Gardoll in 23.44

Kingsbrae Kota (Ando's Mac-Kingsbrae Nelly) for Charlie Northfield in 23.32

Kingsbrae Kenzie (Spring Gun-Spare Cash) for Charlie Northfield in 23.48

Zoe Kate (Magis Sprite-Mitcharlie Mia) for Mitch Northfield in 23.60
