Another 'Metro' Win For Cini's Princess

METRO Princess scored her fourth Wentworth Park win for Londonderry's Phillip Cini yesterday week but her 66-year-old trainer is not ready to quit the permanent work force just yet.

Apart from one WP win when she “pinged” the lids and led throughout, Metro Princess has acquired the reputation of being a notoriously slow starter and “desperate” railer.
But yesterday week she exited an unfavourable box six draw and after being fourth to the back straight, stayed on the outside and swept around the leading division to hit the front at the top of the straight.
Showing her characteristic strength at the finish, Metro Princess drew away to win by three lengths from Wyembah Charlie and Savanaka Two in the handy time of 30.34sec.
After the race Cini had mixed feelings because while he admitted to “jagging” the trifecta, conceded he had not backed Metro Princess straight out.
“I have $200 on her nearly every time she races because she continues to work so well in trials,” he said.
“But I couldn't bring myself to back her tonight when she drew box six.
“I have been working in the concreting industry for 40 years and while the greyhounds are a wonderful pastime, I'm not in a position to go full-time.
“I am on just over an acre at Londonderry and to train greyhounds professionally one needs to have anwhere up to 20 dogs in work because some are always sidelined for different reasons.
“My capacity at home is for a maximum of eight greyhounds so I won't give up work just yet.
“That could change though because I have a litter of pups by Banjo Boy from Diva's Law being educated and so far the reports from the breakers are fantastic.
“Diva's Law was a handy bitch I trained, she was a Wentworth Park winner and had good early speed.”
