Australian Cup Finalists Bred For Success

GROUP 1 glory awaits one of eight finalist in Saturday night's Australian Cup at The Meadows each bred in their own special way.

GROUP 1 glory awaits one of eight finalist in Saturday night's Australian Cup at The Meadows and an analysis of each of their pedigrees points to each and every one of them having been bred with the opportunity of such success.

The eight finalist all fit a successful pattern when breeding.

Let's take a look at just what that pattern is.

First, their sires. Four of the eight are by Fernando Bale, two by Barcia Bale, and the others by sons of Barcia Bale in Mepunga Blazer and Dyna Double One.

It has long been known that track record breakers “generally” make the most successful stud dogs. In the case of this year's Australian Cup eight, all four stud dogs were track record breakers and Group 1 winners.

It's that age old adage … success breeds success.

And, when it comes to the damline of all eight of the Cup finalists, that again is to the fore. Seven of the eight are among the best damlines this country has produced. The eighth is a US line but proven among city winners in Australia.

But what stands out most is that almost every one of the Cup finalists has been produced by a high class race bitch … success breeds success.

Let's run through them.

1 UTAH BLUES

His dam Utah Miss (SH Avatar-Ebby Miss) won 19 races and $53,000 and was a finalist in the G2 Richmond Oaks and also the Bathurst Gold Cup.

Utah Blues is bred on a reverse cross to superstars Catch The Thief and Playlist.

2 LAKEVIEW CRUISER

A litter brother to G1 Silver Chief winner Lakeview Walter, their dam Lakeview Maisey (Cosmic Rumble-She's Bossy) won 15 races and $30,000 and was a Sandown winner. Cruiser is bred on the Fernando Bale/Cosmic Rumble cross proven via Poco Dorado, Blue Moon Rising, Veloce Nero, the star WA galloper West On Augie and the great NZ litter which includes Big Time Else (G1 NZ Oaks)  and three other G1 performer.

3 SHIMA CLASSIC

This bitch is bred on a virtually identical cross to superstar Shima Shine. Their dam Shima Song (Dyna Tron-Shimaguni) won 28 races and $288,000 with a win in the G2 Geelong Cup, 2nd in the G1 Maturity and she was a finalist in three other G1s. Second dam Shimaguni (intensely in-bred) was a superstar stayer and just as good at stud. The famous “portrait” family.

4 TOMMY SHELBY

Tommy's dam Serena Fly High (Bit Chili-Sky Fly High) is from a dominant damline as well which includes Pantera Nera, Dam Slippery etc. Serena Fly High won 20 races and $96,000, was a finalist in the G3 WA Young Star Classic and became a fine stayer in WA. Tommy is bred on the Awesome Assassin-Alice Dooley cross that produced hall of famer Paua To Burn.

5 TYLER DURDEN

His dam Shanakee (Barcia Bale-Punk Rock Lass) won five races and $22,000 and was a Sandown and Meadows winner. She is a half sister to Trixta Rox a finalist in the G1 Maturity and G2 Launching Pad. This is the famed Hoppy's Star direct damline. Tyler Durden is bred on an almost identical pattern to champion Sennachie and also boasts the highly proven Fernando Bale/Barcia Bale cross.

6 FERNANDO BLUEY

Another with a classy dam, this time Naughty Cazza (Fabregas-Molly Tee) the winner of six races and $26,000 and a multiple Meadows and Sandown winner. This is the famous Ready To Rain damline which has been hugely dominate in the past decade or so. Bluey is bred on the highly successful Fernando/Fabregas cross that boasts Group class Deliver, Slingshot Gypsy, Me Me Mia, Supersound, Red Hot Mouse and that wonderful NZ litter that includes Group stars Big Time Brie, Big Time Fairy, Big Time Jonie and Big Time Vegas.

 7 TIGGERLONG TONK

Tonk gets another chance at his initial G1 glory and he deserves it. His dam Tiggerlong Dot (Spring Gun-Tiggerlong Petal) won 20 races and earned $58,000, was a multiple Wenty Park winner, and a finalist at G3 level and in the Dapto Oaks.

8 CHRISTO BALE

An international flavour to his pedigree. Dam Houston Bale (Turanza Bale-Sequoia) won eight races and $40,000 from five wins at Sandown and she got 600m. Her mother was the US-bred Sequoia a winner at Wheeling Downs and then at The Meadows and Sandown when she was brought here. This is an interesting pedigree. Turanza Bale is bred identically to Fernando's dam Chloe Allen, so a mating to Barcia Bale with Houston Bale was always going to recreate the proven Fernando/Barcia “nick”.
