Baker: Tommy Shelby Pup ‘The Real Deal'

BRIAN Baker "never" gives out a cheer when one of his dogs wins any race, but he broke that tradition on Wednesday with Waikarie Molly.

BRIAN Baker “never” gives out a cheer when one of his dogs wins any race, but he broke that tradition on Wednesday at Albion Park when Waikarie Molly sprinted clear to win a 395m maiden by eight lengths.

“They bet me $7.50 and I just kept backing her,” said Brian after the win by the daughter of Tommy Shelby and Wheatacre.

And Waikarie Molly was the second leg of a winning double for Brian and the litter, her brother Eli's Mate winning the first maiden heat.

“She had been trialling every Tuesday for the past few weeks at Albion Park and running 22.80s every time,” said Brian. “No one hid her, but I was lucky, a few in the race through they could win  and backed their judgement.”

Baker kept the litter and has been raving about them for some time.

“I'm a huge wrap for the Tommy Shelbys,” he said.

“Their demeanour in the paddock is something else, nothing phases them, and I believe Waikarie Molly could be the real deal.”

The litter will not be two until late in August but Baker reports they had to be educated at 11 months.

“I always send our pups to Postman's Ridge for education,” he said.

“John Collins was selling up and he prompted us to send the litter early as among the last he would educate. They were just 11 months.

“When they came home, we gave them plenty of time, but they did not go to education after our usual routine.

“But, they are a special litter.

“Eli's Mate is very green and he will keep getting better and better when he learns what it is all about.

“We have another as good as Molly.”
