Baker's ‘Delight' At Landing Top Job At The Q

THE man credited with bringing the wildly successful The Phoenix concept to life is the new boss of the Queensland Greyhound Racing Club.

THE man credited with bringing the wildly successful The Phoenix concept to life is the new boss of the Queensland Greyhound Racing Club (QGRC).

Ashley Baker, who steered premier venue The Meadows between 2019 and 2021, will take the reins of QGRC which manages racing at the new state-of-the-art The Q three-track complex at Purga.

Baker's appointment follows the whirlwind tenure of media identity Peter Gleeson who resigned from his post in February after just six months in the role.

For Victorian-based Baker, the announcement prompts a return to the greyhound racing fold, having departed The Meadows in the aftermath of the inaugural – and hugely successful – The Phoenix in December, 2021.

"To see The Phoenix come to life was one of the proudest moments during my time at The Meadows,” Baker said.

“COVID was a challenging period particularly in Victoria and The Phoenix was a game-changers for the industry. When I stepped step away from greyhound racing, I knew then it was never going to be forever.

"The opportunity to lead the QGRC and help shape the future of greyhound racing in Queensland is incredibly exciting."

Ashley Baker will take control of The Q as the new QGRC CEO

Regarded universally as the most exciting job in greyhound racing, Baker understands the enormity and importance of the task at hand, ensuring The Q realises all of its potential, both on and off the track.

"There's no doubt that The Q is one of the most ambitious projects we've seen in Australian greyhound racing," he said.

"Our goal is to make it a hub not just for racing, but for community engagement and industry growth.

"I'm incredibly honoured to be entrusted with this role. There's a strong foundation in place, and I'm looking forward to working with the team to build something truly world-class."

Baker, who before his time at The Meadows enjoyed stints with both the Victorian Office of Racing and Werribee Racing Club, is the current CEO of VFL Club Williamstown Seagulls.

"Sport and racing have always been at the heart of my professional journey," Baker added.

"Coming into this role, I bring a deep respect for the industry and a commitment to innovation and integrity.  I am truly excited to be able to contribute to this wonderful industry again."

Baker's appointment comes as the lucrative Queensland winter carnival gets into full swing, with the rich Q GOLD meeting slated for this Saturday.
