Barcia Blue Boy Bags Bulli Gold

THERE was no more satisfied person at Bulli on Saturday night than leading trainer Peter Lagogiane.

That's because the endless hours of hard work getting Barcia Blue Boy to the racetrack had finally paid off with a Group 2 victory in the Bulli Gold Cup (472m).

The son of Barcia Bale and Scissor Queen (by Knocka Norris) started $2.50 favourite and scored by four and a half lengths over Ad Astra with three-quarters to Ebby infrared in third in 25.93.

“As fast a dog as I've ever trained,” said Peter after the victory which was the eight in just 11 starts for the speedster which is owned by Dawn Garrett.

“But, he has virtually been a nightmare to keep sound.

“He's had a never-ending worry with a metacarpal and unfortunately it is the one right on his railing foot, the one that gets the most pressure.”

Barcia Blue Boy took his earnings to $59,000 with the victory and Lagogiane admitted he was confident going into the final.

“I thought he would head the couple inside him by the first turn and he only had to hold out Poppy Jack,” he said.

Immediate plans for the dog will centre on one-turn track feature races like the upcoming Maitland Cup.

“He cannot trial around a circle because of the metacarpal problems and that makes racing on two-turn tracks a problem as well,” said Peter.

“But, nothing comes easy in this game. I've had to stop trialling him and restrict all his training to straight work.

“He is as fast a dog as I've ever trained, right up there with the best of them.”

Lagogiane says Barcia Blue Boy was bought from breeder Ben George as a pup because he is bred identically to his former star sprinter Beast Unleashed.

“The pedigrees are identical and we all know how good the Beast was,” he said.

Beast Unleashed has 38 litters, the oldest of which are 13 months.

“We've been very pleased with the response to him,” said Peter.

Barcia Blue Boy is yet another of the progeny of Scissor Queen to prove Group class. The winner of two Grafton Sprinters Cups, she has produced litters by Fernando Bale, SH Avatar, Barcia Bale, Fabregas and Magic Sprite.

Her best progeny include Monster Fish (28 wins, $115,000), Robson (16 wins, $105,000), Snoop A Loop (49 wins, $58,000), Duce Royal (21 wins, $49,000), Reviewer (7 wins, $31,000) etc.

Robson won the G1 Waterloo Cup in NZ and was second in the G1 Auckland Cup.

Monster Fish was second in the G2 Traralgon Cup and G2 Cranbourne Cup.

Vicki's Queen, also trained by Lagogiane and owned by Garrett, was a finalist in the G1 Paws of Thunder.

Reviewer was a finalist in the G1 Vic Peters.

Sulzanti, now a fine stud dog, was a finalist in the G2 Sandown Shootout.
