Barefoot Zulu To Make Return In Maitland Cup

BAREFOOT Zulu makes his return to racing in a heat of Thursday’s Group 2 Maitland Gold Cup now under the training of Joe McFadyen.

GRAFTON record holder Barefoot Zulu makes his return to racing in a heat of Thursday's Group 2 Maitland Gold Cup (450m) now under the training of Joe McFadyen.

Barefoot Zulu (Sennachie-Kooringa Maizie) was trained for owner Simone Kellemeyer by leading trainer Steve Keep when sweeping through the Grafton July Maiden Classic.

He then broke the track record with a 24.98 win there in August and finished third to Nad Al Sheba in the Maitland regional final of the Million Dollar Chase.

FIELDS AND FORM MAITLAND THURSDAY

He injured a toe when trialling 29.80 around Wentworth Park in September when being prepared for the semi-finals of the MDC.

He has been with McFadyen for a little more than a week.

"Thommo (Simone's partner John Thompson) brought the dog down to trial at Maitland and I happened to be there," Joe said.

"Thommo felt the dog needed another look at the track and he asked if I would keep him for the Cup series.

"I was Johnny on the spot.

"I took him back and trialled him on Saturday and he went nice."

Thompson had driven the 12-hour trip from Queensland to trial the dog. Barefoot Zulu will return to Thompson after the Maitland Cup quest.

If successful, it will be back-to-back Maitland Cups for McFadyen after winning the race last year with Nangar Jim. He will also line-up sizzling last start winner Ali Tango in the heats.

Barefoot Zulu has drawn the four in his heat at Maitland on Thursday and meets some smart gallopers including You Never Lose, a recent third to Sunset Frazier in the Group 2 Black Top.

"I've had a look at the field and Michelle Sultana's dog (You Never Lose) will be very hard to beat," said Joe.

"But, the six likes to step hard right so that might give him a good run early.

"The toe he hurt is fine, but I'm monitoring it all the time."
