Bewildering's Stud Career Begins With A Bang

BEWILDERING's first runner Eilish, a stylish winner at Sandown on Sunday, is a high class youngster with a bright future, says Seona Thompson.

BEWILDERING's first runner Eilish, a stylish winner on debut at Sandown on Sunday, is a high class youngster which Jason and Seona Thompson have a huge opinion of.

Eilish made her race debut at Sandown, without having seen the track, when scorching to a 29.69 GRV Vicbred maiden heat victory on Sunday.

She was bred and is owned by the Thompsons who raced the dam Jungle Junction, a daughter of Cosmic Rumble and champion bitch Cindeen Shelby.

Jungle Junction won the Group 2 Vince Curry Maiden when trained by legend Queenslander Reg Kay.

“She is a pretty nice bitch indeed,” said Seona.

“We bred a litter from Jungle Junction to Aston Bolero which had a dog pup. There was rave reports about him at breaking in but unfortunately he died of a twisted bowel.

“We thought so much of Bewildering that we put Jungle Junction to him for her second litter.

“She had four bitches and one dog and this is the only one of the pups to race so far.”

Bewildering is owned by brothers Bill and Serge Buccilli who also own the Thompson's star race bitch Black Opium (Black Magic Opal-Captivating).

The top flight sprinter goes into Thursday night's Sapphire Crown Final at Sandown hoping to break a frustrating run of seconds at group 1 level.

Black Opium has been second in a Melbourne Cup, Australian Cup and Brisbane Cup,  but also been a finalist in the Topgun, Easter Egg, Million Dollar Chase and National Sprint.

Seona Thompson says Black Opium, or Sarah as she is known around the kennels, will become the first greyhound allowed into the Thompson home when she finally retires from racing.

“There is a bed already made up for her,” said Seona.

Thompson says Black Opium has come back better than ever since a spell and she rates her hard to toss in the Sapphire Crown.

But, she also believes kennelmate Aston Silk will be her biggest danger.

“When the box draw was being done, there were two dogs left and two boxes,” said Seona.

“They were our two bitches. I wanted Black Opium to draw the five to allow her more time in the boxes which gives her time to settle and then jump well.

“But, she has come up with the four. Aston Silk is a good beginner, probably not as quick as Black Opium, and she will stay straight in the run to the first turn.

“If Black Opium leads around the first turn, she can win.”

The Thompsons are amazed at the improvement in Black Opium's maturity since returning from her spell.

“Bill and Serge are great friends of ours and are among the regular clients we train for these days,” said Seona.

The Thompsons have 25 in training at the moment, up from their normal number of 15.
