Bluey Bursts Into Taree Cup Decider For Thomas

A FEW months ago, Terry Millar and his family asked trainer John Thomas to give their dog Reel 'em Bluey a try with the hope John may improve him to become a Group class greyhound.

It took John one race start to achieve just that.

Reel 'em Bluey ran 30.76 the quickest of four heats of Wednesday's Group 3 Taree Cup (537m) and has come up with box two in the rich final.

“They will be tap dancing all the way along the highway,” said John after the Worm Burner-Miss Cousin dog raced away from Return Mac to win impressively by four and a half lengths.

“I got the dog a while ago and even though Terry and his family had won at Wentworth Park with him they felt there was more to him,” said John.

“I worked him along and knew he would go well after a great trial at The Gardens last week.”

Thomas is overjoyed the dog has drawn the two in the Group 3 final.

“He's desperate to rail,” he said.

“I'm hoping the red (Hurricane's Fury) does not get in his road to the first turn.

“I believe it is not that quick early.

“But, there is a great deal of pace in the final. Cataclysmic is well boxed to get across from the eight, and Return Mac in the seven in nicely placed.”

Thomas expects Reel 'em Bluey to improve on his heat performance his first run since February.

Other heats of the Cup went to Group 1 star Ritza Donna in 30.88 by a neck over Hurricane's Fury, Zambora Ti8ger by a length and three-quarters in 31.12 over Big Boy Wilson and Cataclysmic in 30.98 by three and three-quarter lengths over Robell Magic.

G3 Taree Cup final (537m) in box draw order: 1 Hurricane's Fury, 2 Reel 'em Bluey, 3 Robell Magic, 4 Ritza Donna, 5 Big Boy Wilson, 6 Zambora Tiger, 7 Return Mac, 8 Cataclysmic. Res: 9 Glenreagh Bullet, 10 Pepper Keeping.
