Borocay Summer To Sizzle In Sandown Cup Test

FORMER Victorian Borocay Summer returns home at the peak of her powers for a tilt at the heats of the Group 1 Sandown Cup on Thursday night.

FORMER Victorian Borocay Summer returns to her original home state at the peak of her powers for a tilt at the heats of the Group 1 Sandown Cup (715m) on Thursday night.

The daughter of Feral Franky and Miami Fernando has drawn box two in her heat of the Cup for trainer Steve Withers and comes into the series off eight wins from her past nine starts.

Her recent step up to distance racing has been a revelation with her winning the Group 3 The Miata and running a 601m track record at Cannington.

"She had lost her way a bit in Victoria and her owner (Jobell Ahern) rang me out of the blue to ask if I would train her," Withers said.

"It was a rare time that we had a spare kennel.

"Once she got her confidence with us, she has kept coming forward and coming forward."

The bitch ran the fastest of the heats of the Group 1 Perth Cup (29.42) but had no luck in the final when fifth to Deadly Avenger.

Withers has been in Victoria long enough to give her a box-to-box from the 715m start.

"She has raced there, but I wanted to get her used to the start again," he said.

"Her plus is she leads but she can be a little suspect at the finish of a 700 metre race.

"She has won in 41.62 at Cannington and taking a comparison with Max Capacity, she is certainly right up to Group class over the distance here."

WA stayer, Max Capacity, has been in NSW with Peter Lagogiane making the finals of the G1 Association Cup and The 715 and proving himself a high class stayer.

Borocay Summer, a half sister to Group 1 star Amron Boy, will head north for the Queensland Winter Carnival if she races well in the Sandown Cup.

The main target will be the G1 Queensland Cup (710m) at Q2 Parklands. The heats will be run on June 26 with the $175,000 final on July 5.

The Sandown Cup final, worth $150,000 to the winner, will be run on Friday week.
