SUPERSTAR sprinter Aston Rupee has been installed as an even money favourite to win next Friday night’s Group 1 Adelaide Cup (530m).

Six heats were run and won on Thursday night at Angle Park while Aston Rupee was safely tucked away in Victoria after securing his place in the final by way of his electrifying Match Race Challenge triumph last week.

The brilliant son of Kc And All recorded 29.95 to win the series for trainer Glenn Rounds, the only greyhound to lower the 30-second barrier at the new Angle Park circuit.

But to prevail in the Adelaide Cup and secure the first Group 1 of his career Aston Rupee will need to offset box eight in the $100,000-to-the-winner showpiece.

“It’s a nice long run to the corner it seems so box eight isn’t a huge concern,” Rounds said.

“You can’t control box draws. Sure, you’d love one or two but the fact is he’s got eight and that’s what we need to work with. The dog is in fantastic shape and I couldn’t be happier with him.

“Not having to be on the road yesterday to contest the heats is a bonus for sure.

“I’ll decide in the next day or so what exact preparation I give him. I haven’t completely made up my mind yet.”

Setting the time-standard from Thursday night’s heats was the Vadim Roz-trained Spring Lilac which downed Keep It Black by three-quarters of a length in a fast 30.22.

Trainer Troy Murray has won two Adelaide Cups through the deeds of Miss Spicy (2006) and Golden Night (2020) and the leading SA conditioner will play a strong hand in 2021 after winning heats with Came And Went (30.33) and Major Major (30.48).

Angela Langton and Jeff Britton were well represented in Thursday night’s heats and the powerful kennel will be a major player in next week’s rich finale qualifying three runners.

Immensely talented Mepunga Blazer pup Weblec Blazer put up a huge performance to down his kennelmate Mr. Fix It in 30.25 while Do It raced his way into the final in 30.36.

The final heat provided another hometown win with the Cameron Butcher-trained Jack’s Well scoring over Tyler Durden in 30.42.

Butcher of course put the polish on the great Worm Burner which finished runner-up in the 2016 Adelaide Cup behind Aqua Cheetah before returning a year later to finish down the track to Raw Ability.

Before Thursday night’s Adelaide Cup heats Aston Rupee was an odds-on $1.70 favourite but from his box eight draw bookies have taken a risk with TAB fixed odds pushing him out to an even money quote.

Second favourite at $5.50 is Weblec Blazer from box four while Do It is $7 from box two and Major Major $8 from box one.
