Came And Went's Derby Hopes Receive Boost

CAME And Went has lived right up to his name in recent times flitting between NSW and SA, but he heads to Richmond for a Derby heat on Friday.

CAME And Went has lived right up to his name in recent times flitting between NSW and South Australia, but he heads to Richmond for a Derby heat (520m) on Friday night.

The son of Barcia Bale-Hillary put together a fine career for breeder-owner Terry Hill in South Australia.

He was transferred to Jodie Lord in November last year and promptly reeled off a 29.55 Wentworth Park win.

Straight after that he headed back to South Australia to join the Ben Rawlings kennel and in two runs finished second to Springvale Roxy in the SA Sprint Championship.

Darren Sultana took over the dog four weeks ago … back in NSW.

Darren turned Hill and George Kairouz' sprinter Mr America into a straight track superstar so it was natural Came And Went would join his kennel as well.

“I've had him for four weeks and put him through the Bulli Gold Cup heats,” said Darren.

“He went OK at Bulli but I get the feeling he is a two-turn track dog.

“He's had a couple of trials around Richmond and gone good.”

The biggest thing in Came And Went's favour is that he will get a dream run to the first turn from his box two draw.

“The one is an early scratching and he has a vacant box in the three,” said Darren.

Sultana will decide Came And Went's future after he contests the Derby series, but has not ruled out an Easter Egg bid in a few weeks time.

Littermate, Shall Not, also joined the Sultana kennel late in January and in three runs up the Richmond straight he has won twice, the latest in a flying 17.26.

“He really surprised me,” said Darren.

“He copped a couple of bumps in running but hit the line really strong.

“I'm leaning towards taking him back to the circle.

“He came to me with a pretty good record of 30 starts for 15 wins and eight placings.”
