Can The Eagle Land Launceston Cup?

BLAKE Pursell is a chance to land his first group race title in Tasmania when he lines up two runners in the Launceston Cup Final on Monday night.

TRAINER Blake Pursell is a chance to land his first group race title in Tasmania when he lines up two runners in the $40,000-to-the-winner Ladbrokes Launceston Cup Final (515m) at Mowbray on Monday night.

The 26-year-old trainer will be represented by Sprint Gordon and Goodnight Vicki and, if he doesn't take home the trophy, there's a good chance his father will.

Victorian-based Brendan Pursell has qualified Eagles Nest Egg which is $3.10 equal favourite with Wynburn Sheean in the tab.com.au market.

LAUNCESTON CUP FIELDS & FORM MONDAY NIGHT

Blake Pursell has firmly established his skills as a trainer in Tasmania and his current racing stock have been prominent in the biggest group races held in the state.

“It's been a good run with the kennel and I couldn't be happier with my team – getting two runners in the cup final is very special,” Pursell said.

“I've been very fortunate to have owners both locally and interstate that have backed me.

"Good owners make all the difference in this game."

Pursell has come ever so close to achieving success in the Ladbrokes Launceston Cup having finished second twice with Be Like Bill and Twisted Reality.

“Overall, it has been down to box draws; hopefully, luck will come our way this time," Pursell said.

“My two runners will need some luck from the start but if they can land close to the lead early, I'm sure they'll do themselves proud.

“Sprint Gordon has made all three group finals in the last few months and never runs a bad race. He's the best of my chances."

The group 2 feature has brought together a fantastic field with all eight finalists bred and owned locally with only Eagles Nest Egg trained interstate.

It will be an emotional win if either Highland Wonder or Quick Joey Small is successful for Longford trainer David Crosswell following the death from cancer of respected owner and former trainer Syd Holland.

Highland Wonder and Quick Joey Small were among his last greyhounds.
