Cataclysmic Holds Off Late Bids To Win Lismore Cup

CATACLYSMIC held off determined bids from Respectability and Boys Light Up to land the Lismore Cup (484m) at Casino on Tuesday night.

CATACLYSMIC held off determined bids from Respectability and Boys Light Up to land the Group 2 Lismore Cup final (484m) at Casino on Tuesday night.

It was a home town victory for long-time Northern Rivers trainer Allan Lang.

“Wasn't it a good idea to move the Lismore Cup to Casino,” Lang joked. “This dog absolutely loves Casino so it suited him perfectly.”

Cataclysmic is a son of Lang's former champion sprinter and much underrated stud dog Paw Licking and the Magic Sprite bitch Magic Liar.

The winner got a dream run to lead going past the 411m boxes.

Respectability made a run at the lead with 200m to go but Cataclysmic held him off to score by three-quarters of a length.

Boys Light Up was third a length and three-quarters away.

Respectability started favourite at $2.40 but Cataclysmic was next at $3.10.

It brought the winners career stats to 26 starts for 19 wins and four placings and his earnings to $82,000.

Lang raced sire Paw Licking who won the G1 Hobart 1000 and G2 Cups at Traralgon, Shepparton and Maitland.

Both winner Cataclysmic and third placed Boys Light Up are by Paw Licking and are in-bred 3×4 to the Northfield family's famed broodbitch Pretty Jacalyn.

“I bought him as a pup for $3000 from Charlie Northfield,” said Allan Lang.

“He's a good little boy and my first ever Lismore Cup finalist.”

Immediate plans are likely to include a tilt at the upcoming Wauchope Cup series.

“I've been going to Wauchope for the carnival for a few years,” said Allan.

Lang believes Paw Licking has been a much underrated stud dog.

“I don't think there are any straws left for him, unless someone has one stored away somewhere,” he said.
