Chris Enjoys A Field Day In Easter Maiden Decider

THE "puns" are too good to resist after Field Day gave Chris Field the perfect Easter present at Grafton on Sunday winning the time-honoured Easter Maiden.

THE “puns” are too good to resist after Field Day gave breeder, owner and trainer Chris Field the perfect Easter present at Grafton on Sunday winning the time-honoured Easter Maiden (450m).

The son of Hooked On Scotch and Magical Mia downed his littermate Tide In with fellow littermates Dad's Dream fourth and Pat's Boy sixth.

Field Day scored by eight lengths in 25.24 with Local Legend in third to land the winner's cheque of $12,000.

The Grafton 450m track record is held by Cash View at 25.01.

Chris Field, 73, has been in greyhound racing since he was 15 and has travelled the world checking over greyhounds.

“This dog (Field Day) has always been four or five tenths the best of the litter,” said Chris.

“His run home times are phenomenal.

“He runs home in 5.26 from the 350m boxes and 5.03 from the puppy boxes and I've never seen a run home that fast at Grafton.”

Immediate plans for Field Day are to have a couple more starts at Grafton and then possibly head to Victoria.

“I'd like him to get close to 25.20 or better and if he does that, Jason Thompson might be tempted to take him on,” said Chris.

Neville Brown gave Chris the bitch Magical Mia and her first litter, four pups by Orson Allen, were all winners.

“I picked out Hooked On Scotch for this litter because his mother was such a great producer,” said Chris.

“And, Magical Mia's mother My Lady Day is also such a great producer.

“Having great mothers on both sides of the pedigree is something.”

Chris has since given Magical Mia to Holly Taylor and she has bred her to Jungle Deuce.

“Holly and her brother Chad helped me box the dogs on Sunday night and they have been a great help for me,” said Chris.

“Every time Chad handles one of my dogs, it wins.”

Chris lamented his mate Darryl Bates died 10 months ago.

“Darryl let me rear the litters on his property and he was such a great help when we were bringing them up,” said Chris.

“But, Darryl got crook and died about 10 months ago.

“But, his brother Billy comes over to my place every day to help out with the dogs and without him I'd be lost.”
