Comedy Act's Near Record Run No Joke

COMEDY Act opened The Golden Chase series (431m) at Ipswich on Thursday with a remarkable near track record 24.59 performance.

COMEDY Act opened The Golden Chase series (431m) at Ipswich on Thursday with a near track record 24.59 performance.

And for Riley Johnston, whose dad Mick owns and trains the dog, it was the first ever winner he has handled.

Riley is an integral part of the training scheme for the Johnston kennel.

Dad Mick was in Canberra on Thursday but “excused myself” from a meeting to watch the race.

The Golden Chase is the sprint version of the renamed Ipswich Auction series.

Comedy Act (Cosmic Chief-Who Nose Size) lived right up to the promise he showed during the recent Vince Curry Maiden series when coming out of box five to win the first of the Golden Chase heats for the Johnston family, scoring by seven and a half lengths.

The track record is held by Regal Recall at 24.54.

Comedy Act's 24.59 is the fourth fastest time.

Other 431m stars are:

24.57 Bubble Guppy, Panama Canal

24.58 Go Lassie Go

24.59 Flash Reality, Times Three, Comedy Act

“I can tell you Riley is pretty excited about handling his first winner and the dog running a near record,” said Mick.

The kennel was confident after Comedy Act slipped at Ipswich on Monday night in spectacular fashion.

“We knew he would break 25 seconds, but didn't expect him to run that sort of time,” said Mick.

The Johnstons freshened Comedy Act for the Auction sprint series.

“He's paid up for the Auction so you have to give it a go,” said Mick.

“To see him come out like that was something.”

Other quick heats were Kia Kaha (24.82) and Johnny Koala (24.94).
