Cranbourne Record Holder Vic Peters Bound

SOME serious firepower heads Sydney way this Saturday night with It's A Blaze and Houdini Boy trialling at Wentworth Park in preparation for the Group 1 Vic Peters Classic (520m).

And the star Kel Greenough-trained duo won't be the only two interstate greyhounds put through their paces at headquarters this weekend with WA sensation Tommy Shelby having a hit out in preparation for the group 1 series also.

At Cranbourne on Saturday night, Greenough guided It's A Blaze to a track record breaking victory in the GRV Vic Bred Maiden Final (520m), while later in the program Houdini Boy weaved his way through the field for a dazzling success in the Listed Winter Cup (520m).

Greenough's Cranbourne Magic Show

The performances more than enough for Greenough to earmark the group 1 series with the exciting pairing.

"We'll take them up on Saturday night and give them a trial to see how they go," offered Greenough.

"With It's A Blaze we'll try to change things up as much as we can and see what works and what doesn't. The noisy lure at Wentworth Park should help too. While he's doing everything right in the blinkers we'll keep pushing ahead but the option is always there to step him up in distance if need be."

And while Greenough admits keeping It's A Blaze's mind on job is demanding plenty of attention, the same can't be said for Houdini Boy.

"He's the complete opposite – he'd chase through a wall," Greenough said.

"I'm hoping the Wenty boxes see him begin better but if he comes out and runs six seconds to the mark on Saturday I'll know it hasn't worked. But he handles himself very good in a field as he showed on Saturday night.”

Worth $75,000 to-the-winner, heats of the time-honoured Vic Peters are slated for Saturday July 4 with the final to be run and won on July 11.

Open to greyhounds whelped from March 2018, some of the country's brightest young sprinters are being set for the series.

They include Victorian sensation Catch The Thief which trials at Wentworth Park on Tuesday night while some of the leading local hopes include Xerri and Zipping Zeek, both powerhouse winners at Wentworth Park on Saturday night.
