Curt Lee Sets SA Derby Benchmark

THE Glenn Rounds-trained Curt Lee will size up his fourth group race final as favourite in next Thursday's Group 3 South Australian Derby (515m) at Angle Park.

Heavily supported to take out the third heat of the $25,000 to-the-winner feature on Thursday, the son of Fernando Bale was simply brilliant leading all-the-way to score by 11 ¾ lengths, carving out a sizzling best of night 29.50.

Winner at 15 of his 23 starts, Curt Lee has drawn box four for next Thursday's decider, chasing a maiden group race victory following previous efforts in the group 2 Launching Pad and Bendigo Cup Finals, before finishing a narrow second in last month's Group 3 Warragul St. Leger Final.

On a night of fantastic racing out of Angle Park on Thursday, the remaining heats were annexed by Weblec King for Matt Lanigan in 29.70, It's A Riot for Ben Rawlings in 29.80 and Mob Squad for Jessica Sharp in 30.12.

Meanwhile, three heats of the Group 3 SA Oaks were also run and won at Angle Park on Thursday night with smart Moreira bitch Submission setting the time standard at 29.70.

Trained by Brad Keel, Submission made it six wins from 11 starts in landing her Oaks heat, defeating fellow Victorian Mepunga Maggie by 4 ¾ lengths.

The remaining heats were taken out by Miss Bellawood for Jeff Britton in 29.92, while Coorong Lucy took out the final heat in 30.21 for Cameron Butcher.

Both bitches are by Worm Burner, continuing his sensational start at stud for Cameron and Yvonne Butcher.
