Impressive Daytona On Great Chase Path

SHEPPARTON regulars could not have been more impressed when Daytona surged away in a 450m maiden on Monday night in 25.15.

SHEPPARTON regulars could not have been more impressed when Daytona surged away from a maiden field over 450m on Monday night to win by almost 12 lengths in 25.15.

But trainer John Barbara had some advice for punters.

“I've got a litter brother at home that is two lengths quicker than this dog,” said John.

“His name is Aquarium but he hurt a wrist and is having a bit of time off.”

Trial watchers have targeted Daytona for some time.

“He went 25.54 at Geelong in a trial and that's why he started $1.40 on debut at The Meadows in August,” said John of Daytona (Bernardo-Veetee Saharrah).

“But one of Jamie and Brooke Ennis' (Amron Dan) ran him down on the line in 30.17.

“Then he ran in the final and hurt a fibula so I gave him a bit of time off.

“He's come back great and trialled 25.15 at Shepparton a week ago and ran right up to that on Monday night.”

Daytona runs in the final next week and Barbara will then head to the Group 3 Great Chase series coming up.

“This dog can run,” said Barbara. “We are not sure if he will get a strong 500 metres yet, but since his little break he has come back wanting to race.

“We've got a few nice young ones coming through the kennel at the moment.”

Boom youngster Rejuvenate (Hooked On Scotch-Zall Good) had his colours lowered by his litter brother and kennelmate Hot Scotch at Shepparton on Monday.

The Paul Brown-trained pair clashed in a 450m final with Hot Scotch leading throughout in 25.09.

Rejuvenate had won his first four starts including scorching wins over 385m on debut.

But Hot Scotch continues to put together an impressive record as well.

He has now won six of 11 starts.
