Devil Dodger Takes Aim At Bendigo Cup

CHIEF Havoc Cup winner Devil Dodger heads to the heats of the Bendigo Cup (425m) on Sunday coming off a best-of-the day trial on the track last week.

Owned and trained by Tanya Nieuwendyk at Sunny Corner near Bathurst, Devil Dodger (Orson Allen-Dundee Mist) has drawn the two in heat six of the Cup and comes up against a powerful field.

Tanya's partner, Glenn Starr took Devil Dodger to Bendigo last week to trial and he reeled off a 23.90 at his first look there.

FIELDS AND FORM BENDIGO SUNDAY

“He was easily the best of the trials,” said Glenn. “The next best was 24.19 but the club had turned over the track a couple of days before and I was told it was a very good run.

“It is still hard to get an ideal gauge on how good he went.”

Devil Dodger goes into the Cup heat off nine wins and 11 placings for $76,000 in his 31 career starts to date.

He is a Wentworth Park winner but Starr says the dog does himself no favours by getting worked up in the race night kennels.

“I wouldn't be going down to Bendigo if we didn't think he had a chance,” he said. “But he will certainly need to be in front and on the bunny to win.

“But that's probably the story with the race.

“Whatever is in front will probably win.”

Devil Dodger comes up against such Victorian stars Ferdinand Boy the one-turn Cups king, Action Girl, Aston Merit, Zigzag Cabang and Nicolson Bale.

“He will have to be at his best to beat that field,” said Glenn. “There are at least four or five who are great chances.”
