Different Paths For Derby And Futurity Winners

TRAINER Tony Apap is looking at graded races with Fearghal Monelli while Tarquin Neal is eyeing the Rising Stars with Hara's Pandora.

TONY Apap is looking at graded races with Fearghal Monelli, Tarquin Neal is eyeing the Rising Stars with Hara's Pandora.

That is the wash-up after Ipswich's Derby and Futurity finals on Saturday night.

Fearghal Monelli ran 30.45 off the rails to lead throughout in the Derby beating Boys Light Up and De Ferran.

“When he drew the rails, that put him right into the final,” said Apap of Fearghal Monelli who took his record to seven wins and nine placings from 24 starts for $48,000.

“The good dogs, De Ferran and Black Comanche, drew the middle and both of them were in trouble early,” said Apap.

Fearghal Monelli is one of four dogs sent to Apap by his close mate David Hobby from WA when Hobby was subjected to a Covid vaccination ban.

“It's really good to win a race like this for Dave,” said Apap. “He needs the money,” he joked.

Apap has been switching Fearghal Monelli from circle to straight racing at Capalaba and he said it had worked wonders with him.

“No big plans,” said Apap. “He will probably go back for graded racing at Albion Park. The box draw was everything for him. And he ran right up to his times.”

Tarquin Neal and his partner Jemma Daley will sit down today and map out a program for their star studded young team heading towards the Rising Stars at Albion Park in Three weeks.

Hara's Pandora was brilliant in winning the Futurity in 30.36 by almost eight lengths over Smart Houdini and Samson's Delilah. It was her fifth win in 13 starts.

“She hurt a webbing a little while ago and the time she needed off to recover has done her the world of good,” said Tarquin.

“She had always shown great ability but she has been behind Hara's River and Hara's Skye to this stage.”

Tarquin and Jemma will endeavour to keep their kennel stars away from clashing in the lead-up to the Rising Stars at Albion Park.

“They all deserve a chance in that series,” but we don't want them to meet before that.”

Tarquin admits he threw Hara's Pandora “in the deep end” early in her career taking of hot youngsters in races like the Emerging Origin series.

“But, that break forced on us with the split webbing had done her the world of good,” he said.
