Emotions Flow As Fusion Mint Wins Cup Thriller

TRAINER Wes Mcdonald has landed the biggest win of his career with Fusion Mint’s slashing victory in the G2 Maitland Cup on Friday night.

TRAINER Wes Mcdonald has landed the biggest win of his career with Fusion Mint's slashing victory in the Group 2 Maitland Gold Cup (450m) on Friday night.

Mcdonald had to endure a 10-hour roundtrip on two occasions in his bid for Maitland Cup glory but it paid dividends with the daughter of Hooked On Scotch simply sensational in the $40,000-to-the-winner decider.

Fusion Mint went into the heats of the series without a trial at Maitland with Mcdonald using her previous start at Goulburn as a pointer to decide whether a Maitland Cup tilt was on the cards.

As history would have it she flew at Goulburn, booked her Maitland Cup ticket, and then went on to annex the Group 2 showpiece.

"I said leading into the final that if she won all the credit would be with (partner) Kylie and that's definitely the case," Mcdonald said.

"It was Kylie that put the idea in my head and gave us the courage to chase the race."

Fusion Mint set up the dazzling Cup triumph with sizzling sections of 7.73 and 18.00 before stopping the clock in 24.81 to defeat a fast finishing Black Tsunami by a neck.

Chief Lightning filled third, a further length away.

"To win this race means everything," Mcdonald boasted post race with daughter Chelsea by his side.

"For me, Kylie and the three kids … they do a lot of the work at home too. It's a family victory.

"It's a bit of a shame that Kylie and the little fella isn't here, it would have made it more special, but I'm sure they'll be cheering at home though.

"This is why we get up every morning and do it all, the late nights and hours in the car. It's all for moments like this.

"Just very special."

Fusion Mint's Maitland Cup success extended her record to 11 wins from 20 career appearances. 

On the strength of her recent performances, there are bigger things in store for the regally bred type, which has now furnished into the complete package.

Meanwhile on a big night of racing at Maitland, the Future Stars (400m) Final went the way of Calico Bluff for trainer Adam Jones in 22.25.

The son of Feral Franky defeated Forged Iron by 3 ¾ lengths with Spring Laver another neck away in third.
