EXCITING youngster Extra Malt takes on a 5th Grade final (520m) at Albion Park on Thursday night heading towards the rich Ipswich Auction series on Saturday week … and for owners Graham and Leanne Hall she is lucky to have stayed in their kennel.

The Halls bred Extra Malt by Paw Licking from It Gets Better and put her and two of her sisters through the Auction when they were six months old.

“We could hardly get a bid for the first two and this bitch was the third one to come up in the sale,” said Graham.

“She got to $2750 and I said to myself ‘stuff it, she can come home’.”

Extra Malt is Queensland’s latest boom youngster starting 11 times for eight wins.

She has already won at Albion Park in 29.60, 29.61, 29.73 and 29.77.

“We trained her mother during our stint in Victoria and when her owner said he was planning on selling her before the end of her career, I jumped at the chance of buying her,” said Hall.

“She’d won at The Meadows over 525 metres but really struggled to get the distance in town.

“But she had great early pace.”

Upon the Hall’s move back to their Queensland home, they brought It Gets Better (Dyna Lachlan-Irish Malt), a bitch hugely in-bred to the Wheeler bloodlines, back with them and picked Paw Licking as her first mate.

“Yes, we put speed to speed,” said Graham. “But  with Extra Malt we have also got the last section to go with the pace.

“And, Paw Licking has been such an underrated stud dog. I’ve just bought another straw for him.”

Extra Malt has drawn the seven and Hall says there are four very strong chances, she, Transgenic, Cash Stack and Fernando Beach.

“We will need a bit of luck to get across at the first turn,” he said.

“But, if she is anywhere near them coming to the 600 metre boxes, she will be hard to hold out.

“That’s as long as Cookie’s dog Cash Stack is well back off them. Gee, he can come home.”

Extra Malt has always shown great potential, a 24.31 first slip at Albion Park and a 30.03 first trial over 520m, proving that.

“I have purposely stepped her up to 500 metre racing from her debut,” he said.

“I never wanted her to go in short course races. The Ipswich Auction is her target and it works out perfectly for us with the heats on Saturday week.”

Dam It Gets Better, winner of nine races during her career, is in pup to Fernando Bale to continue to staggeringly successful cross he has with daughters of Dyna Lachlan.

“I’m hoping she has six pups,” said Hall. “That way I will not be tempted to sell any.”
