CHAMPION WA sprinter Tommy Shelby and star NSW chaser Jungle Deuce are the lone interstate runners in Friday night’s Group 1 TAB Melbourne Cup heats (515m) at Sandown Park.

Eight cutthroat heats of the $500,000-to-the-winner series will be staged on Friday night where 62 of the 64 hopefuls are trained in Victoria.

Spearheading the series is Group 1 Topgun hero Aston Rupee,  the star of Australian greyhound racing drawn suitably in box three in heat four.

And while the draw appears favourable for the Glenn Rounds-trained superstar, the appearance of Australian Cup runner-up Fernando Bluey to his direct outside is sure to keep the Sandown track record holder honest.

Another big winner from Tuesday’s box draw is Cranbourne Cup hero Koblenz which has drawn box two in the opening heat.

The son of Fernando Bale has been a well found second favourite behind Aston Rupee in all-in betting and the 24-time winner has been handed every opportunity to progress to the Melbourne Cup final.

Heat two will see three-time Group 1 winner Tommy Shelby return to racing but his task hasn’t been made easy, drawing box eight in his Melbourne Cup bid.

Third in the race last year behind Hard Style Rico and Simon Told Helen, Tommy Shelby has raced on just three occasions since winning the Group 1 Golden Easter Egg at Wentworth Park in April.

Qualifier three has provided one of the clashes of the card with Wow She’s Fast taking on Typhoon Sammy.

The two The Phoenix hopefuls match motors in a heat that also comprises star bitch Qwara Bale looking to recapture her best form from earlier in the year and exciting up-and-comer Ben Mayo.

Heat five sees Adelaide Cup winner Do It as one of the leading contenders while the sixth qualifier is one of the more open, featuring greyhounds the caliber of Weblec Blazer, Aussie Secret and Jungle Deuce just to name a few.

The seventh heat will see McCooly’s Lad and Lakeview Walter – third and fourth respectively in last week’s Shootout – as two of the major players, while the final heat sees an in-form Music Event take on Rebellious and the ideally drawn Lala Kiwi.

The night kicks off with four heats of the Group 1 Bold Trease (715m) for the stayers.
