Fire Legend Lands Lismore Cup Gold
FIRE Legend cracked it for a deserved group race victory in Tuesday night's $40,000 to-the-winner Lismore Gold Cup for Mark Moroney.

MARK Moroney and partner Melissa will get married on December 12 and for something to do yesterday while driving to Lismore with Fire Legend to run in the Group 2 Gold Cup, he and Melissa booked their honeymoon to Darwin.
“I’m a bit superstitious,” said Mark.
“I’m not one to hope to win a race like this and they pay for the honeymoon. I’d rather make the booking and hope fate works out for the best.”
It did just that last night when Fire Legend (Fernando Bale-Tick Away Fire) led throughout to win the Lismore Gold Cup (520m) in 29.80 beating Best Fit by two and a quarter lengths with a length and a half to Oski in third.
And, just to seal that superstition, on Monday Mark even bought a frozen semen vial to champion sire Fernando Bale to use on Fire Legend’s half sister Sweet Fire All.
“Everything has fallen into place,” said Mark.
Immediate plans for Fire Legend will need some discussion between Mark and Melissa but they are warming to a tilt at the Group 1 Melbourne Cup.
“He is unbeaten in four starts at Sandown and has run 29.41 there,” said Mark.
“If he goes for the Cup, he will go back to Jason Thompson to train for those few weeks of the series.”
Thompson prepared Fire Legend for most of his career until Mark got him home for a tilt at a series of country cups which will also include the Gosford Gold Cup at Christmas.
“He will need to go into a Prelude of the Melbourne Cup,” said Mark.
“He knows everyone at Jason’s place so it is obvious he will go back there if we decide that’s the way to go.”
Mark also has long term plans for Fire Legend to stand at stud.
“He’s won 19 races now and topped the $100,000 in prizemoney,” he said.
“And, wherever he goes he can run fast times.
“I’d like to see him get a chance at stud down the track, especially if he can put a few country cups, like the Lismore win, together.”
