First Winner For Thirty Talks

TONY Brett was grinning from ear-to-ear at the conclusion of Tuesday afternoon's Ipswich program, despite not having a winner.

In fact, the leading Queensland mentor didn't even have a runner.

But it was a memorable afternoon nonetheless, with Brett's former top flight sprinter Thirty Talks siring his first winner, the Glenn Smith-trained Mrs. Sing scoring on debut over the 431 metres by 3 ½ lengths in a nippy 25.37.

"It was a great thrill, we knew it was about now we might see them start bobbing up so we'd been keeping a bit of an eye out," said Brett on Wednesday.

"I'm always trialing at Ipswich and Glenn had mentioned that she was going alright, it's nice to get the monkey off his back nice and early and get his first winner, really delighted."

Just 19 months of age, Mrs. Sing is out of the wonderfully bred Spring Dream, the first bitch served by Thirty Talks.

"The stud game can be very tough but the pleasing thing has been when I've been speaking to people with his pups they're all very positive," added Brett.

"With a stud dog early on the reports are usually either really good or really bad and people can tend to just follow, which can be quite unfair. So far though things have been very positive about Thirty Talks' pups temperament and keenness – getting a nice one early on is a big plus as well."

Winner at 30 of his 51 race starts and pocketing $366,000 in prizemoney for Brett and owner Len Antonio during his marvelous career, the fashionably bred Thirty Talks (Where's Pedro x Unfinished) has proven to be particularly popular with breeders in his home state of Queensland.

"We've really made an effort to try and be as helpful as possible here in Queensland, mostly with fresh semen to assist in getting bitches in pup locally," explained Brett.

"It really takes a good 12 months to either make or break a stud dog's chances. At the moment all the reports coming through about his break-ins is positive and Tuesday's winner was a nice little kickalong."
