DOESN'T time fly!

This year marks 21 years since champion sprinter Rapid Journey annexed the Group 1 National Sprint Grand Final at Cannington in hair raising fashion for Jane and John Carruthers.

Coming from the clouds to land a length victory in the then $40,000 to-the-winner feature, Rapid Journey defeated SA representative Bula Boy and Queensland star Faithful Hawk in a gripping finish to the group 1 blockbuster.

The Hall of Famer enjoyed an unprecedented year of racing in 1998, his group 1 National Sprint title sitting beside group 1 wins in the Topgun, Adelaide Cup, Melbourne Cup, Golden Easter Egg and Perth Cup.

Winner at 33 of his 54 starts, those victories catapulted his prize money earnings to an at the time world record $530,995.

Had the four-time track record holder's prize money earnings been calculated on current day purses, the son of Amerigo Man would have won in excess of $1.3 million … the majority of which in a calendar year.

Such was Rapid Journey's influence, he was inducted into the Hall Of Fame in 1999, directly upon retirement.
