Forbes Can Begin MDC Campaign A Winner

TONY Forbes has done his homework and says sectionals show Weffalee Shield can kick start the Million Dollar Chase series on a winning note.

QUORROBOLONG owner-trainer Tony Forbes has done his homework and says the sectionals show his extra smart sprinter Weffalee Shield can kick start the 2023 Million Dollar Chase series on a winning note.

Taree hosts the first round of the MDC with two heats on Wednesday and Weffalee Shield (Sennachie-Tweety) is drawn perfectly in the eight box in the second.

“His form is great,” said Tony of the winner of 19 races in 46 starts, but significantly unbeaten in four outings at Taree.

“But the eight is a great box for him, and on the sections he can run at the track, I see him leading and being very hard to catch.”

Weffalee Shield's recent form has been first rate.

He chased home Oscar Moses at Richmond in the National Straight Track series and that dog went to Victoria to run a great third to Unleash Collinda in the Group 3 final.

Weffalee Shield then went to The Gardens for a 29.73 win when drawn in the seven and scoring by five lengths.

“He was in plenty of trouble at The Gardens, but he still picked himself up and won,” said Tony.

Of the opening rounds of the MDC, Tony said he had set Weffalee Shield for this.

“He's fit and it is a race I've planned for him,” he said.

“Of course, I'm not expecting a million dollar pay day down the track, but I think he can make this final and it is worth $7000.

“That would be nice.”

Tony has cuddled his dog.

“He's had 43 starts in 18 months and by all rights he should be able to run in this race again next year,” he said.

“He only turns three at Christmas.”

Of his rivals he rates Hurricane's Fury hardest to beat off the rails.

“That Joe McFadyen is a very good trainer and they don't get into his kennel without having plenty of ability,” said Tony.
