Gordon's Memory Lives On After Sad Passing

BEN Shepherd had to make a decision on Monday, a decision that came just a few hours after his mum Judy, 84, had died.

Judy, you see, had a runner, Mayflower Babe, in a Novice at Albion Park on Monday night.

It was an easy decision to make.

Judy would have wanted her dog to compete, so Mayflower Babe went off to Albion Park and promptly finished last.

That performance had nothing to do with the memory of Judy Gordon who had battled myelofibrosis for seven years.

It finally caught up with her, but not before Judy put a final stamp on her absolute devotion to greyhound racing.

Only last week, Judy had ventured to Spring Creek, half way between Ipswich and Toowoomba.

She had a pup to pick out at John Thompson's property, a bitch she wanted by Primo Uno from Tarks Tammy Rose, a pup she named Candy.

“Mum had already picked out a racing name for the pups,” said Ben. “It will be Tea Rose.”

A few days later, Judy was in hospital fighting for her life.

Her doctor wanted to put her on morphine on Saturday night as she struggled for life.

Judy would have none of it.

She had two runners at Ipswich on Saturday night and wanted to be able to watch how they went.

Cursorial Queen finished third and Lone Piper ran second.

Later that night, when her son Ben visited his mum, the morphine was brought out.

Judy died in the early hours on Sunday morning.

She had told Ben she had used the $1400 of her life savings to pay John Thompson for the rearing of Candy that newly acquired pup.

A close friend of the family, summed up Judy Gordon.

"Judy is the epitome of why we love what we do," he said.

"Activists do not get it. Judy lived for greyhounds and greyhound racing.

"That was pretty evident right up to the final hours of her life."
