GWIC Simplify The NSW Breeding Process

Greyhound Welfare & Integrity Commission has introduced two new breeding licenses' aimed at making the breeding process easier for participants.

THE NSW Greyhound Welfare and Integrity Commission (GWIC) has announced the introduction of two new breeding licenses' aimed at making the breeding process easier for participants.

The introduction of two new breeder categories – Breeder-Owner and Breeder-Whelper – follows industry wide consultation aimed at improving "access for those without breeding facilities of their own" and to "reduce regulatory red tape and cost to owners".

The new Breeder-Owner category also creates a platform for greater recognition for owners who are unable to whelp a litter on their own.

"This initiative removes the reliance on breeder leases, giving Breeder-Owners the opportunity to best utilise the expertise of highly qualified and well-resourced whelpers," GWIC CEO Steve Griffin said.

The second of the Commission's new breeder categories, Breeder-Whelper, is for those who still wish to manage the whelping or care for pups before they are old enough to leave the dam.

All existing participants in NSW that hold a current breeder license will automatically be moved into the Breeder-Whelper category.

"The specialised facilities, depth of knowledge and 24/7 monitoring provided by these whelpers will help to ensure the best standard of care for new litters, driving higher standards of welfare across the industry and positioning NSW as the global leader in greyhound welfare," Griffin said.

The new license categories are effective immediately.
