Honey Soy's Lucky Break

FOR trainers Sonia and Ricky Martin, wins don't come more satisfying than at Launceston on Monday night when Honey Soy brought up her first victory in five starts.

Lining up from box one in the $4,000 to-the-winner Life Members Maiden (515m), the daughter of Dyna Double One x Leica Comet exploded from the traps to lead comfortably through the first turn with the race well in hand.

Coming off the back, Chilled Out mounted a challenge, though Honey Soy wouldn't give in, kicking clear to score by 3 ¼ lengths in a gutsy performance.

It may have only been a maiden, but for Rosevale-based Ricky Martin it meant considerably more.

Go back to October 2017 and this eight-week-old litter, reared by the Martin family, were just being pups when a minor accident saw Honey Soy break her back right leg. Ricky Martin takes up the story.

"When pups are that little they can get under your feet and one of our sons accidentally stood on this bitch breaking her leg. Our vet Kim Barrett did a great job with her and being only eight weeks old it would heal quickly, she spent most of her life living in the house," he detailed.

"We eventually got her to breaking-in stage and from her first runs at Devonport she was showing good early speed from the boxes. They are a young litter still and to have four win so far is big thrill for my family.

The name Honey Soy comes from getting spoiled by Ricky and Sonia's kids with their favourite bag of chips.

"We just continue to take our time with this litter, there are four more pups yet to race so it will be an interesting few months ahead to see how they progress.

“I think Honey Soy will get stronger and her times will get better – she is just beginning to learn her craft," Ricky said.
