Hooked On Scotch Lands Hobart Thousand

AUSTRALIA's best sprinter Hooked On Scotch landed a second group 1 victory with a powerhouse near record victory in Thursday's Hobart Thousand.

AUSTRALIA's undisputed best sprinter Hooked On Scotch has recorded a powerhouse victory in Thursday night's Group 1 Ladbrokes Hobart Thousand Final (461m).

Facing off against a stellar field for the $75,000 to-the-winner time-honoured feature, the Jason Thompson-trained star made the race his own soon after box rise, beginning brilliantly from box two to lob straight into second behind leader Atley Quick.

From there the race was as good as over, the Adelaide Cup hero adding a second group 1 to his bulging resume, extending his record to 11 emphatic victories from just 17 starts, his stake earnings swelling to $340,000.

The son of Barcia Bale and Nicki Fields posted a near record 25.49 in annexing Tassie's flagship group 1, just a length outside Stanley Gordon's 25.44 time-standard.

And while all the plaudits were with the winner in Thursday night's Hobart Thousand decider, claiming a fourth group race success, the performance of the Sonia Martin-trained runner-up Atley Quick was remarkable.

Going around as the rank outsider from box one, the son of Barcia Bale, owned by Australian cricketing legend Ricky Ponting, was gallant in defeat, continuing his consistent recent form.

Third placing went to Leica Prayer for Jillian Stamford, the daughter of Dyna Double One, another rank outsider, doing connections proud with her minor placing.

But back to the winner.

With another group 1 title under his belt to close out 2019, Hooked On Scotch is on the cusp of what promises to be a bumper 2020.

The hugely talented sprinter turns two-years of age on Friday. His best is yet to come.

What better way to celebrate the milestone birthday than his mesmerising Hobart performance on Thursday.

He truly is something else.
