Can Tommy's Stud Career Start With A Bang?

CHURCHABLE breeder-trainer Jamie Hosking is so confident of the success at stud of Tommy Shelby that he has sent his classy bitch Waddling Witch to be mated to him.

Jamie has every reason to be confident in Tommy Shelby's stud success.

On Tuesday afternoon, Jamie runs Powered Up (Tommy Shelby-Hesperides) in a 431 metre Maiden on debut and she is the first starter by her famous sire.

FIELDS AND FORM IPSWICH TUESDAY

Tommy Shelby (Fernando Bale-Serena Fly High) retired to stud the winner of 31 races and $1.02 million after victories in the G1 Australian Cup, Golden Easter Egg and Hobart 1000. He was second in the G1 Vic Peters and third in the Million Dollar Chase, the G1 Melbourne Cup and Gold Bullion and won, was placed or a finalist in numerous other glamour races.

Hosking expects Powered Up to race well on debut.

“She is only 17 months old, but is doing everything right – I'm really happy with her,” he said.

“She chases great, comes out of a box and just wants to do it.

“I've got three in the litter and they are all the same.”

Powered Up will have just a couple of starts before being given a rest.

“I find young dogs improve greatly with pre-training, a couple of runs, and then a spell,” he said.

The decision to put Waddling Witch (Dyna Double One-Pauls Memory) to Tommy Shelby was an easy one for Jamie.

She won six races and $34,000 but was a 29.74 winner at Albion Park and a Young Guns finalist there. Her litter sister Mick's Recall has been one of the country's top stayers with 18 wins and $141,000.

“The Tommy Shelby pups are happy, playful pups but when the time comes, they really switch on,” said Jamie.

Powered On has had two 431m trials in preparation for Tuesday afternoon's start running 25.59 and then 25.30.

“She's up against a Fernando Bale-Miss Splendamiro bitch drawn in the red for Brett Hazelgrove so it loses nothing on pedigree,” said Jamie.

“But this bitch is quick out, so she should run well.

“Everyone is watching her. The pressure is on, but she will make it for sure in the long run.

“The dog in the litter is as good but he is a bit immature and won't start yet.”
