Kiwi Star ‘An Absolute Machine' Says Brett

TONY Brett could not believe it when he looked at the clock to see Postman Pat had clocked 22.26 in a 395m trial at Albion Park on Sunday.

STAND-IN trainer Tony Brett could not believe it when he looked at the clock to see Kiwi sprinter Postman Pat had clocked 22.26 in a 395m trial at Albion Park on Sunday night.

Postman Pat (Hooked On Scotch-Birdie Tee) has been sent north to the Brett kennel by Jason Thompson and he runs out of the three box in a Brisbane Cup Prelude (520m) on Thursday night.

FIELDS AND FORM ALBION PARK THURSDAY NIGHT

He clashes with WA star Crumble Monelli which has drawn the four.

Postman Pat, unbeaten in five starts since joining the Thompson kennel from New Zealand, went within one-tenth of the Albion Park 395m track record held by The Phoenix finalist Tyanna Belle.

“Alpha Zulu went 22.50 when he first arrived here,” said Tony.

“I was expecting Postman Pat to run about the same or even a bit quicker, but you are always surprised when they run that fast.”

Brett handled superstar Black Opium for the Thompson kennel when she won the G1 Brisbane Cup and he said that champion bitch trialled 22.29 at Albion Park in the lead-up to her Cup win.

“But, that was her second campaign at Albion Park, so she knew where she was going,” said Brett.

Brett admits the buzz around Postman Pat has been incredible.

“It is amazing the number of times I've been asked if he was coming north,” said Tony.

He believe the 22.26 trial could equate to a 29.60 or 29.70 performance on Thursday night but is still unsure what he could run.

“He went to Sandown and reeled off a 29.12 at his first run on the track,” he said.

“His first section on Sunday night of 10.39 was super and let's hope he can bring that on Thursday night and run a 5.50 or even quicker to the first mark.”

Brett said it had taken the dog a little while to settle in, but he was greatly pleased with the way he has pulled up.

“Sensational,” said Tony. “You would not think he had a run.”

Brett said Thompson predicted the dog would take a little while to settle in.

“But, he has started barking in the kennels when we are letting the dogs out, wanting to be the first to do anything,” said Tony.

“Jason said that was him when he was feeling at his top.”

Brett handled Postman Pat's sire Hooked On Scotch when he headed to Albion Park for the same Brisbane Cup won by Black Opium.

“This bloke is a smaller version of his father,” said Brett.

Brett is as impressed with Postman Pat as any dog he has been involved with.

“They don't go any better than he did in that trial,” he said.

“He's a machine.”
