Last Hurrah Well Backed To Cap Off Gr8 Eight Series

BRETT Nye will be hoping Last Hurrah can put an exclamation point on an outstanding Gr8 Eight series over the 595m at Sandown tonight.

BRETT Nye will be hoping Last Hurrah can put an exclamation point on an outstanding Gr8 Eight series when he lines up as favourite over 595m at Sandown tonight.

Last Hurrah has been in superlative form, placed in each of his past 10 starts including six wins.

But it has been the Gr8 Series where he has stamped himself as one of the country's premier middle distance greyhounds, contesting each of the four middle distance events for two wins and two second placings.

And after drawing box one tonight, he looks well place to pick up his third victory in the series.

"He's relishing the corner starts," said Nye.

"I don't know what it is but he seems to get out better on the bend and take off. He's a mad railer but the small field should suit Weblec Haze too, and I reckon and you can't rule out Rajasthan as well. But it's great to go to Sandown with box one."

Last Hurrah has won six of his nine career starts in the red vest and punters have taken notice. He opened the $2.30 favourite with tab.com.au but has since been backed into $1.90, including a bet of $450 at $2.30 on Tuesday and $440 at $2.15 this morning. Around 81% of support has been for Last Hurrah.

While the $10,500 first prize is a tantalizing carrot, Nye is eyeing group glory with his star with the heats of the Group 2 McKenna Memorial just a week away.

"That's the plan. He's been pulling up amazing which is why we've been able to run him in so many of these races.

"He's in great form and hasn't put a foot wrong so I've very happy with how he's going."

Tonight's Gr8 Eight, the last at Sandown Park for this series, will jump at 6.55pm.
