Eberand In Line For More Maitland Cup Gold

EBBY Infrared gets the chance to emulate his sire Aussie Infrared when he lines up in Thursday night's absorbing Group 2 Maitland Gold Cup Final (450m).

BRILLIANT youngster Ebby Infrared gets his chance to emulate his sire Aussie Infrared when he lines up in Thursday night's Group 2 Husqvarna Maitland Gold Cup Final (450m).

And his owner-trainer Michael Eberand, who stands Aussie Infrared at stud, naturally gives him a great chance.

Ebby Infrared is by Aussie Infrared x Lonesome Knight and has won 15 of his 33 starts to date.

Aussie Infrared won the Maitland Gold Cup back in 2017 for Eberand when he was the dominant speedster of his time.

Eberand is expecting Ebby Infrared to be hard to beat in Thursday's $40,000 to-the-winner decider.

“He had not done much work at all for 20 days prior to his heat win last week,” said Eberand.

“He pulled up a bit tired after the Bulli Gold Cup so I gave him a bit of an easy time of it.

“I'm expecting him to improve a lot from last week's win.”

But Eberand is not so happy with the dog's box five in the final and the fact there is so much pace drawn in the race.

“No, I don't like the draw, but he is such a hard chaser he is still right in this race,” he said.

“I've done the form and I expect Turbo Thomas to be in front. I think the red (La Grand Quality) is the dog boxed to win, but if the pace comes over on him it could be his undoing.

“La Grand Quality is the new Pindari Express of speed racing in my opinion.”

Eberand says Ebby Infrared will progress to the upcoming Golden Easter Egg series at Wentworth Park.

“He is a very good race dog, but not at the level of his father yet,” he said of Ebby Infrared. “But he certainly could get there.

“At one stage of his father's race career he was virtually unbeatable.”

Aussie Infrared continues to enjoy a fantastic start to his start career with one of his early stars, Catch The Thief, recording a sizzling 29.22 to score at Sandown on Sunday.
