‘Massive Thrill': Gus The Jet Races To G1 Glory

TRAINER Michelle Sultana defended her Vic Peters Classic (520m) title with Gus The Jet racing away with the Group 1 feature in style.

TRAINER Michelle Sultana defended her Vic Peters Classic title in style at Wentworth Park on Saturday night with Gus The Jet racing away with the Group 1 feature in commanding fashion.

Last year, the Michelle Sultana-trained Rinsed The Lot raced to Group 1 glory in the male-aged classic at just his sixth race start.

And it was a similar script with Gus The Jet on Saturday night, landing the $75,000-to-the-winner prize at just his seventh racetrack appearance.

But while Rinsed The Lot landed the race as favourite, it was a different story with Gus The Jet which went around as one of the outsiders from box six, having scraped into the finale after finishing third in his heat.

The victory also handed owner, top jockey Brenton Avdulla back-to-back wins in the race, sharing in the ownership of Rinsed The Lot, as he does with Gus The Jet.

Also in the ownership of Gus The Jet is leading Sydney thoroughbred trainer Joe Pride and his son Brave.

Following the win on Saturday night, Sultana admitted it was somewhat of a surprise.

"His box manners, they haven't been up to scratch lately and last week we expected a little bit more from him," Sultana said.

"We knew he could come out and he did tonight and I was in a bit of shock to be honest.

"I knew he could run the time he could run because he's trialled really good here.

"I saw a couple of strong dogs coming and I was just hoping he could hang on and he did it.

"I'm just stoked. Massive thrill.”

Gus The Jet landed the Group 1 flagship at odds of 14/1 in a time of 29.65.

Race outsider Taw Major ran a big race for second for Deb Rowe finishing 1 ¾ lengths away while Cumbria Benny filled third for Steve Fitch another 1 ¾ lengths away.
