McDonald's Treble Anything But A “Joke”

BOB Barker, one of a littermate treble for Rod McDonald at Temora on Tuesday, has a long-term goal of The Thunderbolt at Grafton in June.

McDonald's treble of Bob Barker, Dana Dennis and Dana Poppie are by Ando's Mac and Dana Joker and a litter Rod tried to sell at eight months for just $3000.

“A group of blokes approached me about buying the dog who now races as Bob Barker, and they asked me to train him,” said Rod.

“But, we could not sell the rest of them so decided to keep them all.

“People told me we were crazy breeding with their mother Dana Joker.

“She won only four races but was a very honest chaser who put in all the time and I had read somewhere a while ago that those sort of bitches deserve a go.

“And, she came from a very good litter.

“And, hasn't this turned out great. They have always done everything right, all broke in good and have gone on with it.”

Bob Barker was winning his 14th race from 31 starts when taking out the 1-4 Win Event in 18.65.

Dana Dennis ran 26.10 in a 457m 5th Grade for his eighth win in 28 starts, but Dana Peppie surprised Rod with a slick 18.56 win in a 330m 5th Grade her seventh win in 28 starts.

“Her box manners are not always great, but when she flew out I said to the starter that she would run some time,” said Rod.

“I reckon she was up to an 18.70 but she went 18.56.

“I gave the three all good chances of winning.”

Bob Barker will head on to a sprint feature during the upcoming Temora Cup carnival but Rod is keen to give him his chance at Grafton in The Thunderbolt the $75,000-to-the-winner feature won by Integrity Mate last year.

Rod has 16 in training at Cowra and 16 pups coming through as well as youngsters in the paddocks.

Almost all of them trace directly to the family's 2009 Group 1 Golden Easter Egg winner Dana Beatrice, the third dam of Bob Barker.
