McKeon Proves Too Slick In Jack Sommerville

NOT everything worked out as Mick Landrigan planned in the $50,000-to-the-winner Jack Sommerville Northern Rivers Cup Final.

NOT everything worked out as Mick Landrigan planned in the Jack Sommerville Northern Rivers Cup Final (484m) at Casino on Thursday but McKeon got the job done.

"I thought Integrity Shirl would lead and my bitch would get a cart across with it, and then be too strong at the finish," Landrigan said.

But, McKeon (Bernardo-Fire On Ice) flew the lids and dashed to the front.

She then held off Group 1 stars Dayseas' Rory and Magistrate to win by a length in 27.65 in pouring rain.

Dayseas' Rory was second and Magistrate third, both of them chasing the winner throughout.

It was McKeon's ninth win in 12 starts and took her stakes to $71,000, the winner's cheque being a mouth-watering $50,000, for Landrigan and owner Grahame Blunt.

"It's the biggest win ever for Grahame and myself," he added.

"Grahame was pretty excited."

McKeon comes from the famous "Fire" bloodline of Landrigan's nephew Mark Moroney and she has been with her trainer for six months since her education.

"She broke in only fair, but has done everything right since then and just keeps improving," he added.

"She's just turned 22 months."

He will now set her for the Chief Havoc Cup at Gunnedah on June 1 and 8 the winner's purse for that race being $40,000.

"Then we'll look at a few trips to Brisbane with her," he said.

While Landrigan has been running off nephew Mark's bloodlines for years, he also plans to breed with Queen Wok a 411m Masters winner at Casino on Thursday as well.

I trained her grandmother Lucky Fine who is also from this damline," he said.

"I will breed with Queen Wok, probably put her to Bernardo when she comes on."
