“Best Ever” Team Has O'Brien On Melbourne Trail

South Coast trainer Chris O’Brien has a busy month ahead with his top-class bitch Mortified leading his kennel’s charge, locally and interstate.

South Coast trainer Chris O'Brien has a busy month ahead with his top-class bitch Mortified leading his kennel's charge.

The Nowra Hill-based trainer says he's "never had a stronger team" and he has some big plans for them over the next four weeks.

On Saturday night, Mortified will be back in action in the Ladbrokes Sports Bar Non-Graded Stakes (520m) at Wentworth Park after the daughter of Fernando Bale announced herself in recent weeks as arguably the hottest dog in the state at the moment.

After being knocked out of the first round of heats of the Golden Easter Egg, Mortified went onto to claim best of night honours on Easter Egg Semis and Final nights, running personal best times of 29.40 and 29.37.

"Without a doubt she's never gone better," O'Brien said.

"I actually tried to find a reason not to run her this week but she bounced out of last Saturday night so well it was a case of race or trial and she's going so well it was really a no-brainer.

"There's no reason why she won't run well again this week."

After Saturday, O'Brien plans to make the 18 hour round trip to Sandown to give Mortified and littermates, Quantifiable and Modern Swinger, a look at the Victorian track prior to next month's heats of the Group 1 $100,000-to-the-winner 515m features – the Sapphire Crown and Harrison-Dawson.

"It's the strongest team I've ever had and there's some big targets for them in Sydney and Melbourne in the next month," O'Brien said.

"I have to head to Melbourne to give them a look at Sandown next week because a week later are the heats of the Ladies Bracelet and the Bob Payne Sprint at Wenty.

"Mortified is obviously our top seed but Modern Swinger is lightly raced and he too has a motor while Quantifiable is plenty of pace and is getting stronger and stronger every time she goes to the races."

The Ladies Bracelet and the Bob Payne Sprint and scheduled for April 29 and final night is May 5 with the heats of the Sapphire Crown and Harrison Dawson being run on May 11 before the finals are held on May 18.

Modern Swinger is also set to run at Wentworth Park on Saturday night in the Ladbroke It Dogs Only Heat (520m).
