Morton Embarks On Anniversary Cup Mission

MIGHTY sprinter Morton will take a distinct class edge into his Anniversary Cup heat upon his return to Angle Park on Thursday night.

MIGHTY sprinter Morton will take a distinct class edge into his Anniversary Cup (530m) heat assignment upon his return to Angle Park on Thursday night.

The last time the superstar son of Tommy Shelby raced at Angle Park was when finishing a gallant second to Excavation in last year's Group 1 Adelaide Cup Final.

Morton drew box seven for the third straight week in the Adelaide blockbuster last October with very little changing for this Thursday night's test, drawing awkwardly in box six.

The group 1 winner ventures to Adelaide fresh off an eight-length The Meadows romp last week, his first hitout since finishing second to Deadly Avenger in the Group 1 Perth Cup last month.

MORTON AT STUD

"He'll be a lot better for The Meadows effort – he needed the run," trainer Jason Sharp said.

"I was happy and I wasn't happy. The win was good but I would have liked to have seen him go a little quicker (30.08).

Morton will eye more big race success in Thursday's Anniversary Cup heats

"We had a few little issues to overcome when he came home from WA but we're really happy with him now.

"He's raced well at Angle Park before and he should give a good account of himself on Thursday night. He always does."

Sharp recently took the opportunity to draw some straws from his group 1 star while he was recuperating from injury.

The 21-time winner was off the scene at the end of 2024 after having a toe removed following injury in the Group 3 Silver Bullet last November.

"We've got a few straws there for sale now," Sharp said.

"We are hoping with his breeding and racing performances people might like to use him. But now he's back racing, we won't draw from him again while he is.

"The stud game is tough; we won't be pushing too hard. We'll let him do the talking, hopefully."

FIELDS AND FORM ANGLE PARK THURSDAY NIGHT

Sharp also ventures to Adelaide on Thursday night with the highly talented Colac Kid fresh off a last start third in the Group 2 Geelong Cup last weekend.

The son of Fernando Bale has drawn box four in his qualifier looking to atone for two previous unplaced finishes at the track.

If Morton and Colac Kid do win through to Thursday week's Anniversary Cup Final, it will set up a potential mouthwatering clash with fellow Victorian star Schillaci.

The series boasts $30,000 to winning connections.
